Yeah, even if you were to somehow get it installed you probably wouldn't be able to run it correctly and without issues. It would be best either to back off of Windows 8 or buy a new version of Quicken.

I agree with everyone above. It's time to upgrade. You're trying to use a 9 year old piece of software in a brand new operating system... I think you've gotten your money's worth out of it. I had a quick look at the Quicken website and new versions aren't too unreasonably priced.

Quicken is not supported in the UK and there is no other financial package to match it. I've used it for around 20 years and to migrate to something else now would be a nightmare. Quicken 2004 works fine on Windows 7 but I need a new laptop and know it will be Windows 8. So I have a dilemma. Is there really no way to use it?

I have Quicken 2004 and it's running fine on Windows 8. I'll try it on an 8.1 laptop just in case...
Just Rt click the install (.exe) file and choose Troubleshoot Compatibility. Then it's Troubleshoot Program and Worked on earlier version etc. and choose XP.

Dodger46, you've saved me an awful lot of time and trouble. New to Windows 8 and didn't know that facility existed. Just loaded Quicken XG 2004 with no problems on Win 8.1 laptop. Brilliant. Thankyou.
