well windows 8 is a lot newer and as you can expect with new hardware, theres going to be better speeds. its all a matter of specs. more than anything id expect.

I would hardly consider Windows 8 starting in 9 seconds slow. As for Matlab goes I can't comment as I know very little about it but considering what it does I don't think 13 seconds should be considered slow either. Do you know whether the Kingston drive you have is a SATA II or III drive?
