How to connect our computers through LAN to play games

I am totally stupid when it comes to computers so I need someone who is prepared to answer stupid questions. I have two computers mine and my son's we would like to play games against each other like need for speed etc. both computers have built in LAN and I have a very long LAN cable which they replaced in the office when they went WiFi or something. how do I connect these comps with each other step by step even baby talk if neccessary, we dont like television so we play games alot and I really want to surprise him and spend quality game time with him. :hello:

Are the computers totally separate now? If they are not connected at all though a router or switch, you can hook them up directly.

You may need to buy a crossover network cable, some cards can autoconfigure, but your computers may not.

First off you need to get a router. Basically the router assigns IP addresses to the computers(192.168.1.xx). Most routers at a retail store (Best Buy, Walmart, Etc) will have 5 ports. 1 WAN (Internet Connection) and 4 LAN (Local computers) Just plug your computers into the router and it will assign it an IP address so they can see each other. The router takes your internet connection and splits it off so you can have multiple devices that share that internet connection.
