Hey guys, I transferred Counterstrike to my desktop from my laptop to play on the same steam account a while back. They just released a new update, but steam will not update it because it does not recognize that the game is installed in the first place. My wifi sucks and it would take hours to reinstall! How can i get steam to recognize the game is installed so it will update!???

right click on the game and select validate game files. If it tries to download something, tell it not to - then double click on it to tell it to install. When it asks you where to install to, navigate to your steam folder and select it - it'll automatically scan that folder for installed games, update your game, and you'll be good to go.

DarkSable: when i right click there is no option to validate game files, i also checked in properties,

Well in that case do as I recommended, tell it to start installing, and when it asks you where to install to, navigate to your steam folder.

The game is not in my steam folder its in a seperate folder, should i move it to my steam folder

The file structure should look like this:

%Steam%\SteamApps\common\[folder of game]

What you want to do is tell steam where that first folder, the steam directory, is.

EDIT: If the files for the game aren't in that last spot, in the 'common' folder, then move the folder with the game files there. Of course the game isn't going to work if the files aren't in the right place.

Have you used steam to create a back up of the game?

If so you can just run the back up to install the game. I have 4 accounts in my house and am constantly doing this.

If this is split into different disks (folder names, disk 1, disk 2, etc.), go to disk 1 and run steambackup.exe, this should install the game. Make sure your steam account is logged on.
