Hello,
I have the late 2011 Macbook Pro and have decided to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB (I believe that is as high as I can go) and was wondering if it makes a difference if I use one 8GB or two 4GB. I know that it has two 2GB sticks in it at the moment. I'm sorry if is a silly question I new to this.

Officially, Apple only supports 4GB of RAM per slot in the 2011 MBPs, but the Late 2011 model is known to work with up to two 8GB sticks (confirmed by OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/memory/maxram). So your RAM cap is actually 16GB, and a single 8GB stick would probably work.

That being said, I would stick with the Apple-supported configuration (2x4), unless you were certain you were going to upgrade further during the life of the machine. You're not likely to notice a performance difference either way, since only the integrated GPU really benefits from matched RAM. But macs can be picky about RAM modules in unsupported configurations, especially if they're inexpensive.

You need to buy two 4GB modules for max upgrade. Generally, the standard memory is 2 x 2GB which comes along with the system at the time of the purchase unless requested otherwise by the user.

Single 8GB isn't compatible and I do not recommend even thinking of trying the 8GB module. OEM based systems are picky especially apple. So 2 x 4GB is the ideal config for your macbook.

You can check the following links for compatible memory:

Cheers, mate!!
