first you would need to enable internet sharing on your desktop. assuming its a windows machine, and assuming your router is WiFi equiped.

for windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126

windows xp will want to assign your desktop an IP address of 192.168.0.1. you will want to change your address in your router to something else before you start. (ex: 192.168.0.2) refer to the manual.

for Vista/7: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/using-ics-internet-connection-sharing

now setup your WiFi, login to your router as described in your manual (unless you changed the IP) there should be a wireless wizard to follow. you wont need to worry about the internet wizard

connect your laptop using the network connections wizard, you may have gotten a notification, and connect using your smartphone.

should be all.
