Hey there. I have a problem. I have this Sony Vaio SVE17 laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8. I hate this OS. So I tried to downgrade it to Windows 7 but, I kept getting a error during install. So I took the HDD out put it in another computer. There it was talking about the HDD format is wrong. So I just format the entire HDD and then it would install. Now here comes the problem. When I put it back in my laptop (the HDD) it keeps saying no operating system found. When I put in the install dvd from Win7 it says "secure boot failure operating system not valid" or something like that (never heard of secure boot untill that day). So I tried looking online for help and they talking about secure boot requires a valid/legal OS dvd thingy orso (was rather confusing for me what I was reading). So my brain is telling me this. That I need a legal OS dvd. Basicly go buy a new one. And I can't get in the BIOS to turn off that setting, cause during the startup no key works to get in the BIOS (and I tried all of em).

So here is my question. I have a Sony Vaio SVE17... with no OS installed and I can't install any, cause of that secure boot failure (all my OS dvds are just copies from others). So do I need to buy a new OS dvd or is there a way around that I can still get around that secure boot so I can use this laptop?

Also if that thing about buying a new OS dvd is just nonsence please do tell me. I am desperate at the moment and I don't want to make anymore stupid mistakes :(

You can't. That's the point of secure boot and why it's a terrible terrible thing. Secure boot is not only DRM, it's Apple style lock in. You can now only boot 'Secure Boot' supporting Operating Systems "Ensuring You Enjoy A Safe, Genuine Computing ExperienceTM"

To be honest, it's bullcrap and I hate the idea full stop. It needs to die, with fire. I would return that laptop at the next possible moment.

EDIT: I may possibly be wrong. See here but bear in mind this is for a desktop motherboard and they usually have less locked down BIOS:

An excerpt from webopedia:

Microsoft Secure Boot is a component of Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system that relies on the UEFI specification’s secure boot functionality to help prevent malicious software applications and "unauthorized" operating systems from loading during the system start-up process.
While there is some concern that Microsoft Secure Boot will make it difficult to install Linux or other operating systems on a Windows 8 computer, the secure boot functionality in Windows 8 is primarily designed to protect users from rootkits and other low-level malware attacks by blocking unauthorized (non-signed) executables and drivers from being loaded during the boot process.

Personal computers bearing the Windows 8-certified logo will be required to ship with Microsoft Secure Boot enabled.

You should have kept Windows 8 or at the very least learned what you need to do before just removing the OS. Windows 8 is a great OS and would have only taken 5 minutes to learn how to navigate it had you even gave it half a chance but at last you did not and instead wiped the OS without a second thought. Depending on how Sony locked down the secure boot you may not be able to install anything other than Windows 8. Microsoft has left that up to the OEM's to determine how it should be done. As far as Secure Boot itself it is a very good feature if it is not locked down but some OEM do just that.

Giving Windows 8 a chance you would have found at that everything is faster with Windows 8 from start up shutdown to just running your games and apps. Even finding a program or game from the Metro Menu is faster. Instead of having to click the Start Menu>All Programs>Scroll to the File then click the file all you have to do is Metro Menu>Scroll to the app or game and click to run. Searching is equally as easy Metro Menu>Type the first few letters of the file you want. Beyond the redesigned Start Menu(Metro) the rest of the OS behaves much like Windows 7 only faster and more responsive.

Beyond that if Sony has locked out the ability to turn of Secure boot there may not be anything you can do but re-install Windows 8 however if you did not make a backup media set you may be out of luck even on that if your laptop did not come with a Windows 8 install disc.
