IIS authentication issue (internal vs external)

we have a sharepoint server and I am trying to find a way to simplify authentication for both internal and external users.

It's running on the server 2008 version of IIS.

basically, I need to enable windows authentication... then most of the internal users are automatically authenticated by pass through authentication, but non-domain users internally and externally (yes, we have non-domain users internally too due to some infrastructure limitations) then have issues logging in and have to use domain\user to log in.

The issue is that internet explorer will default to the local computer name for the domain rather than just accept the username and password (like any other browser does) and default to the domain set up in basic authentication automatically. i.e. if I use my work computer thats on the domain, it auto-logs in with no issue, if I use my home computer named Cthulhu and try to log in, it defaults to Cthulhu for the domain unless I specifically use domain\user.

telling the users to use another browser isn't an option, and neither is making them use domain\user... I'm sure other people have run in to this, but I'm having trouble finding relevant threads... most of the ones I have found talk about 2 domains rather than 1 domain and users connecting via the internet.
