How do I Configure around the 2.2TB Rule ?

I recently bought a "Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST4000DM000" from amazon.
I installed the drive and my system recognize it but only as 1.6TB. I understand there might be away to configure my motherboard bios/windows to make use of the whole 4TB but can not figure how to do it.

I know I can't boot from a 4 GB drive. But would like to initialize it as a GPT drive and create a 4 GB partition, so I can use the whole thing.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

OS - Window’s 7 (64)
MB - "ASRock N68C-S UCC"

Most likely the HDD partition it wrong from 1st place and it stuck.

Here is what you need to do:

Boot and verify...

Thanks, but for some reason I do not get the "non-initialized disk" option. Therefore I do not get the Select the “GPT (GUID Partition Table)” option.

It appears to already read the drive "disk 0" 1677.90GB. and when I right click on it the only option I get is

looking at my Disk Drive Properties it looks like I was able to get it to (GPT) using Seagate DiskWizard, but it only changed the 1677.90gb. Its still not reading 4tb. when I boot up into my bios and look at the drive it show 4tb. not sure why when I am in windows it only reads 1677.90 - what to do?

I ran the Seagate DiskWizard software and that how I got it to read as GPT, but when it loads its still showing the drive as 1.639. My Bios clearly shows the drive as 4TB but in windows it reads much lower.

Most likely the HDD partition it wrong from 1st place and it stuck.

Here is what you need to do:

Boot and verify from the BIOS, that you can see the Seagate HDD show up as 4TB

If it does not see the whole 4TB, get a new SATA PCIe with 48bit LBA then you're OK.

If you seeing 4TB - you are good to go
Let it boot to Windows
Run Command Prompt as Admin, At the prompt
Type: DISKPART (e) - (e) is Enter Kay
Type: List Disk (e) - It will show the HDD ID
Type: Select Disk # - # is the ID if the Seagate
Base on your screen shot, the # should be 0
Type: CLEAN (e)
Go back to your Disk Manager
Right Click at the DISK 0 - small portion of the HDD - not the long bar
Select GPT you should see the all 4TB.

Also, change your BIOS SATA configure to AHCI or Enhance - DO NOT USE IDE or compatible mode.
This set up it will take advantage of SATAII and SATAIII

Note: Be careful not to clean other drive - so make sure the ID is correct

Thank you very much for your help.

After loading my BIOS I am able to see the 4TB located in the SATAII_2 Slot (see images). You mentioned to make sure I change my BIOS SATA to AHCI or Enhance, but I can not seem to located/find that option. When I click on SATA Operation Mode (which is currently on [IDE] it just give me the option to select [IDE] or [RAID]. Am I looking in the wrong place? the BIOS seems to give options to enable or disable a lot. I have posted some image to better help show my BIOS screen options.

I guess your Main Board does not support SATAII/III then.
Well - Then you have to settle for slower speed - IDE is 130MB/s <== is slow consider today SATAII/III

But the good point that your system seeing 4TB

Please follow my diskpart command, you will able to see 4TB space...

Thanks for your support. I was able to follow your directions and clean the disk. It does give me the option to format in GPT. But, the drive still is only reading as 1.6TB

I really doubt OP has a 4TB SSD, so, 130 is pretty good for a HDD. Yes, I know there are drives that write faster than 130MB, but, come on, 130 is good.

Perhaps I was not too clear about the speed :)
IDE is 130MB/s MAX bandwith and does not have Async protocol nor NCQ. These are effect the transfer rate greatly

Let re-do over again.
When you go back to Disk Manager
At pop-up Wizard windows ask you to initialize the new hdd.. CANCELED
go to the DM, and confirm there is a unallocated 4TB HDD there
You should see this full 4TB unallocated HDD
Initialize it Manually, not via Wizard windows

I have exactly the same problem. The drive does show up as a 4TB drive but only when placed in a USDB 3.0 drive enclosure. When used as an internal drive, it does not show up as 4TB. Only as 1.6TB. There must be an answer for this issue. My drive is partitioned as a GPT drive so please no one ask me if my drive is partitioned as GPT. It is.

It's a Seagate ST4000DM000-1F2168 and I am using a 2011 model Dell XPS 9100. Fairly new computer but admittedly not yesterday new. I am still trying to figure out what Mother Board I am using.

Any ideas?

There is something funky about USB3.0 and HDD over 2TB.. It has something to do with 4K format thingy... I do not know exactly why...

But the 3/4TB format under SATA port, then use some of USB3.0 enclosure It wont show up - It will ask to format it once connected to Windows

Strange!

Confirm strange behavior with Seagate Backup Plus USB3.0 adapter
