Hi guys, extremely confused looking for some advice.

Building my own gaming rig and can't decide between:

1. AMD FX-6300 + Radeon HD 7950 (XFX Double D - special offer with 6 chart games)
2. Intel Core i5 3570K + Radeon HD 7870 (powercolor/club3d/XFX)

I'm looking to play the usual current games on max settings: BF3, Crysis 3, Skyrim etc at 1080p. Will not be using dual monitors. I'm very big on eye candy and performance, so looking for the best option out of those two for my gaming experience.

If you can think of any other options which will NOT cost more than one of these options and will provide a better gaming performance, then I appreciate your advice and guidance!!

Here are the two full rigs I have proposed:

Build Option 1:
CPU: AMD (Piledriver) FX-6300
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 AMD 970A
PSU: 550W XFX Pro Core
GPU: XFX Double D Radeon HD 7950 - I was enticed by the 6 free chart games, something UK vendors don't tend to do, although read this may not be the best option of 7950. I believe the sapphire, MSI etc are around similar price without free games.
DVD Drive: LiteOn 24x Internal SATA DVDRW
HDD: 1TB Toshiba SATA III 7200RPM
Case: ARIAnet Titan Black Midi Tower Window Gaming Case
RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3
Total = £587/$876

Build Option 2:
CPU: Core i5-3570K
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-Z77-D3H
PSU: 550W XFX Pro Core
DVD Drive: LiteOn 24x Internal SATA DVDRW
HDD: 1TB Toshiba SATA III 7200RPM
Case: ARIAnet Titan Black Midi Tower Window Gaming Case
RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3

GPU Options:
1. VTX3D Black Edition Radeon HD 7870 (Tahiti LE)
2. XFX Core Edition Radeon HD 7870
3. Club 3D 2GB AMD HD7870 Joker Graphics Card

Total Price 1 - £620.44/$925
Total Price 2 - £600.52/$895
Total Price 3 - £606.07/$906

Thanks guys!

Post both FULL builds and prices, maybe we can help you shave of some cash from unnecessary parts to get a 3570K AND the HD7950.

Apologies will post build in a second. Trying to work out, how do I post short links (hyperlinked words) on here?

Just post the links, they will be shortened. Unnecessary effort. :)

You did a damn good job of picking components, LOL I cant do much.

Since a GPU is much more important for gaming than a CPU. Get the AMD build. Consider a different brand of GPU though. The XFX DDs are over[irced and really are not that great. COnsider Sapphire, HIS or MSI cards.

Thanks! I've been spending a lot of time trying to research, as I have been away from PCs and PC Gaming for a few years. I didn't realise how difficult it was.

I edited the total prices above if that's any easier to read.

Thanks, I read the XFX isn't all it is cracked out to be as well. I think I was just enticed by its free games, something not many vendors do in the UK for some reason! I'll have a look at the Sapphire, HIS and MSIs to see what prices there are. I'm sure they aren't too far off that price, just without any free games (which isn't important I guess).

That is very strange, the free games come straight from AMD, not the manufacturers themselves, so all AMD cards should have them. They might just not be marked as such.

Really? I wasn't aware of that! I just visited the AMD website and your right, it states if you buy any 7900 series card you receive three games free. The 6 game offer is unique to that one vendor selling the XFX card.

That is possible. So free games are not in the equation. lol

Anybody else have any tips? Really struggling to decide between AMD FX-6300 + HD 7950 OR i5 3570k + HD 7870 XT. Which combo will give the most noticeable difference to gaming experience? Do they both equal out depending on the game?

Option 1, that 7950 will get you beyond stock 7970 FPS after oc, so you will be able to max everything out. When your gaming at high res, CPU doesn't make anywhere near as much difference as it would with a poorer GPU at lower res. If you OC the 6300 too you will have a fast rig.

Its true that the 7950 + AMD FX 6300 brings immediate benefit over the intel system.
For future-proofing. the faster CPU would be benefited if you were plannng on upgrading only the GPU in a few years.

With the AMD side you "may" be able to opt into a CPU upgrade when steamroller comes around for AM3+.
Then you may get tempted to upgrade when the HD 9000 series comes around (or just add another 7950).

If you choose the AMD rig Hopefully the steamroller CPU out-preforms the i5-3570. Then the additional costs of upgrading the CPU could be justified alongside a GPU upgrade versus taking the slower GPU combination with fast intel CPU. Only will it be worthwhile if you can gain more preformance out of an AMD chip than the i5-3570. Equal preformance is not adequate enough for upgrading costs.

I'm just being devils advocate to give a different opinion. I personally would choose the AMD system but I dont mind taking the risk that AMD will bring a better CPU for the mobo. But if they dont come out with Steamroller for AM3+ don't quote me.

Other point of view:
However, no matter how hard you try you can't future proof your system. I am implying that you may be able to slightly. But this is not certian as the future hardware releases and software demands are unknown. Immediate benefit might be a good idea if you want to play games at best now.
