I just bought a new PC that should have pretty decent performance. But I am having sub par performance, and what's worse the two programs that are supposed to be able to configure my GPU won't damn well work.

Intel Core i5 3750k
AMD Radeon HD7870 2GB OC Edition (Gigabyte)
ASRock Extreme 4
8GB 1600 RAM
1TB HDD
620W PSU

I am trying to play Assassin's Creed 3. I can play it at comfortable FPS at 720p, medium settings. However there are videos on youtube of people playing it at 30fps with fraps with max settings at 1080p with my graphics card!

Now when I play, I am usually under 30fps in enclosed spaces (the ship at the beginning) with graphics set to high (middle) and AA / Shadows at minimum.

To the real point of my question. There are supposed to be two ways to configure the graphics settings.

1 is AMD Catalyst Control Centre. This from here, there is supposed to be a "gaming" tab I can use to adjust things like AA. But when I load it up, all I get is this

2 is "Gigabyte OC Guru II" I have installed this from the disc, and when I try to run it, simply nothing happens. One time I saw the screen flash up then disappear immediately. I can't get it to work. I think this program is meant to be used to adjust voltages and such.

Please help, I am extremely frustrated with this, I don't have much time to game at the moment and I am very angered that I have spend my afternoon trying to figure out how to configure this accursed machine.

You don't need to go into safe mode to uninstall the video card driver. Just boot as normal and follow the steps in this guide www.overclock.net/t/988215/how-to-properly-uninstall-ati-amd-software-drivers-for-graphics-cards

Uninstall and reinstall the latest video card driver from AMD (and install any other necessary drivers ie chipset, sound, etc). If you have Lucid Virtu (MVP) enabled, try disabling it.

The OC Guru is probably a program to tweak your video card, don't bother with that unless you want to OC (or monitor video card stats if it allows it).

Run CPU-Z and GPU-Z to see whether your hardwares and/or their settings are detected properly. You can also install HWiNFO (or similar softwares) to monitor usage and temps of GPU & CPU during gaming.

Check back with us after you've tried these steps.

Thanks for your reply, however something even more frustrating has happened...

My PC is connected to a 24 inch HDTV. I bought the TV for my PS3 and figured I could use it as a monitor too. It might not be quite as soft on the eyes are a proper monitor but it was getting the job done. Well, after reading through a few other threads, I tried to restart the computer in safe mode so I could uninstall the drivers and use driver sweeper... But when I configured it to start in safe mode, it stopped working.

The screen now just keeps flashing "no input signal" even though all plugs have been double checked, it must be the safe mode somehow preventing the HDMI from being transmitted. I don't know, but either way, I can't even get a picture anymore. Anger levels rapidly building
