yes, I have a Sony DVD hard disk recorder that I no longer use and I was wondering if I could make use of the Hard Drive capacity to use as an external hard drive for my pc using the usb connection.

Most of the time it'll work. You just need to be sure that the connectors inside the enclosure are SATA (or IDE if you're planning to put an old IDE drive into it).

Very rarely, a manufacturer will do something with the device's firmware which prevents it from being used as a straight SATA -> USB enclosure. In that case it won't work. But it shouldn't hurt to take it apart, swap in a hard drive for the DVD drive, and see if it works.
