Hello,

I have a D630 and the display keeps flickering when running on the battery. It is perfectly fine when connected to the mains.
I have read about many problems with these laptops but mine seems very strange.

I've installed the latest graphics driver and BIOS update
I've run display diagnostics and there is no flickering during this even on battery
During all diagnostics there is no flickering even on battery
The flickering only starts when Windows starts booting. It even boots in safe mode so I assume it is not a driver problem.

I can't work out what it could be. Anybody any ideas.

Thanks, Dom

Since you already flashed the BIOS and upgraded graphics drivers, this really doesn't seem like a software problem. Looks like a low level hardware problem to me.

You didn't say if the flickering is also happening in safe mode?

I think it could either be a bad battery, but more likely a bad power connector or bad power transfer between the battery and the motherboard that could cause some interference with the display or something. Maybe replacing the battery might fix the issue if the problem comes from the battery, if not then I guess you would have to replace the whole motherboard.

Might not be worth the hassle on a an old laptop. It's common for old laptops to have problems with the battery so people just start to use it plugged in all the time. Yeah I know it sucks, but I have a hard time recommending spending money on a new battery or motherboard for a dated laptop.

It does still flicker in safe mode.

Would bad transfer imply a dodgy connection somewhere? Is this something I might attempt to fix by having a poke around inside to see if there are any loose connections?
I think you're right, it's not worth the hassle/expense to replace anything. I'm not going to spend too long trying to fix it.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.
Cheers, Dom
