hello, I am having problems with a Gigabyte 6950, this model here to be exact:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3693#ov

I purchased it last summer and already one of the fans is starting to make a racket. It is driving me insane. Does any one know if I can apply 3 in 1 oil to the fan, and if so how? Or can the fan be taken off and replaced? I noticed that these fans are held together by three screws. And if so what sort of fans could I replace them with? Any ideas?

This thing is driving me crazy, any help would be appreciated.

You shouldn't try to oil the fans, i would consider to RMA it to have a replacement one or if possible, change the cooler for a aftermarket solution (Zalman, Artic-cooling, etc...)

Oiling fan isn't a good solution as you don't know if theses fans use Ball bearing, fluid dynamic bearing, brass/copper bearing, etc...
They each require a special oil or they will jam or use faster than usual and/or be noiser than before oiling them...

Thanks for the responses. I suppose I will hold off on trying to put oil on the fans then.

Gigabyte apparently has a three year warranty on all their graphics cards, so maybe RMA'ing is the best option. Though I really don't like dealing with Gigabytes slow customer service and I hope I don't have to wait a particularly long time without a graphics card in my system.

I also did think about going for an aftermarket cooler, but I have no idea what brand/ model would fit for this card.

The amont you will be spending on RMA you might aswell get your own cooler. Last time I sent 2GFX Card RMA to Gigabyte they replaced me with hair dryers ! Belive it or not couldn't even sit next to my pc than they apologized I had to return again!

This doesn't mean they are bad just this happened with me.

Check out this if your happy with aftermarket cooler for the card. You can google reviews if you like one.

1. Accelero Twin Turbo Pro VGA Cooler

2. ZALMAN VF3000A EBR Bearing VGA Cooler

3. GELID Solutions GC-VGA02-01 VGA Cooler ICY VISION

To the OP, did you eventually go with an aftermarket cooler, or did you RMA to Gigabyte?

I have a similar problem and am thinking of just RMAing it to Gigabyte, because I already tried fixing it myself by placing some electrical tape between the fan's plastic and the heatsink. That decreased the rattling noise by about 80%, but it's still there, so it's still annoying. I paid a few hundred bucks for this product, and the rattling was part of the description, so I'd prefer it if I could completely eliminate the noise.
