My XP drive finally refused to boot. Now on Win 8 and want to pull data from the old SP drive, now in an external enclosure. The folder I need will not allow access, as it was protected under my old login and password. Is there a way to bypass the protections and retrieve the files?

this usually does the trick

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

though you cant take access of the root of the drive

ie if the drive you want to access is D you cant right click D

but if you open D you can select everything in it and right click

might take quite a while if you have a lot of data on there but it does it all for you

or if its only one folder just right click on that folder

There was widely varying reviews at the howtogeek site. A couple of wonderful's and a couple describing very bad outcomes. Also, this was targeted at Win 7.
So,
Does it also apply to Win 8?
How safe is this to install? I am always leery of toughing the registry.
