I have an Acer Aspire 5736Z-4460 laptop that won't boot. I purchased a SATA cable, downloaded the software, removed the old hard drive, attached it to the SATA cable, then plugged the USB part of the SATA cable into my other laptop to get the data off. The old hard drive spins when I connect it, but when I start the software, it acts like I don't have anything attached.

Am I hooking it up right? Other people mention an adapter, but I don't see a place on my SATA cable for an adapter. The old hard drive spins, so what am I missing?

Thank you for any and all help!

Hi

which SATA / USB bridge adapter ?

most require some sort of power supply as the SATA / USB bridge is for data only

If the USB/SATA adapter does provide 5V power to the drive some laptops do not provide enough power (Amps) for a 2.5" drive. from 1 usb port and definately will not power a 3.5" hard drive

Most 2.5" trays with built in SATA / USB bridge have a USB cable with 2 USB connectors at PC end.
