Extreme lag issues on a high quality gaming rig?

Maybe three weeks ago, I installed windows seven on my computer. This rog is OK, and I have never experienced any lag on it on any game, from BF3 to TF2. So, Suddenly, I am playing Ace of Spades, a low-quality FPS, and suddenly horrific lag. have had this problem before, and I resolved it by doing a system restore. However, this time I do not wish to do another restore. My computer is clear according to Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D. My drivers are the latest available, my computer is top of the range and the Windows error log/event log is clear of anything bad. This only started last night, after a game on the normal server I go on. I often keep my computer running for a few days for downloads to finish, so it does sometimes get clogged up. So, I restarted the computer, and suddenly horrific lag in he desktop view. I have the following backgroung processes running: steam, java update check, skype & microsoft SkyDrive. However, I have about 10 variants of 'svchost.exe' running in the task manager when I show processes from all users. The other user on this computer has never loggged on, so what's wrong? Please help, Edward7089.

So you went from an older version of Windows to Windows 7 ? It must be understood that such a Windows "upgrade" means your computer will be noticeably slower. That being said, I'd do a F8 boot and uninstall your GFX drivers ..... run a registry cleaner to clear out anything GFX related , reboot and reinstall GFX drivers from manufacturer's web site .... do NOT let windows auto install anything.

Finally check CPU and GPU temps while running a benchmarking program.... Id recommend OCCT ...... to see if anything outat whack.

When you upgrade your OS, there will be more svchosts because of backward compatibility of older drivers and system files.

Older games need to be run in a window (and) or in compatibility mode. Most monitors don't go below 800 x600 resolution and some of those older games were designed for a much lower resolution.

There are two Ace of Spades PC games, one is a DOS version, the other is a 2011 version that requires Steam (which might account for the lagging)

Only do a System Restore as a LAST RESORT, because you have also lost any recent updates, and installs, and other things.

See if you can kill and update processes that run without your permission like JavaUpdate and Google Chrome's update process if they're running during your game. Battlefield 3 as an example is a browser based game, and while running it in Chrome, if Google pushes an update, it doesn't care if you're playing Battlefield 3 or not, it gives you the update. I had to switch to FireFox for running BF3 because of that. It decimated my frame rate otherwise.

Maybe even see what your Internet traffic is like. Are there other people in your household? Are they streaming something like Netflix without your knowledge? That can severely choke your connection and potentially kill performance if your game is online based. Explore all options.
