i need some help figuring out what would be the best route to go with the tools (tv and desktop) i have to work with.

for my desktop i have a gateway GT5654 all the hardware is stock. i have done nothing to it besides upgrading it to windows 7.

my specs: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1015001R/1015001Rsp2.shtml

for my tv i have a Sony KDF-E60A20 60" Grand Wega high-definition rear-projection LCD TV

here's a page so you can see what it looks like in the back:

i really have no idea what im doing since this is my first time attempting to use my tv as a monitor so any help would be appreciated. i dont have much money so i hope it wont be expensive whatever i have to buy, id just rather get some professional opinions so i dont waste money on the wrong things.

ps. 60" tv as a monitor... i know... its gonna be pretty rad haha

The biggest issue I see is that you have VGA out and the TV lacks that as an input.

Does it in fact have a tube(the images make it look too deep for an LCD, but maybe its a LCD projector on a flat screen)

back on topic.

You best image quality will come from HDMI and almost any modern video card will give you that. It is important to know that not ALL tvs make a good monitor. Some overscan too much(video cards can attempt to compensate) and can cause more blurring, but HDMI is the BEST that screen should offer from what I can see. That would be followed by component(Y,PB,PR).

Now comes the interesting part, Some video cards will allow VGA -> Component, but many will not. I am not 100% sure about your card, but you will notice LOTS of bad reviews for the VGA -> Component(and the s-vid ect) because users do not CHECK that the equipment they are using will support it.

You cheapest option that will work for sure would be a cheap video card with HDMI(you have to ensure you have the slot on the board and meet the power needs for the card you select.).

I hope this gives you a starting point.

Hmmm, the computer only has a vga output, while only computer compataible interface the tv has is HDMI. The 2 are not compatible.
I see three options.
1). Buy a cheap graphics card which supports DVI and/or HDMI and use a HDMI cable, you should be able to pickup a card and cable for £35-£40.
2). Buy a usb dvi/hdmi adaptor and use HDMI cable, this will probably set you back ~£70-£80.
3). A new monitor. A new 1920x1080 24" screen will set you back ~£150.

It should be noted that your tv is only capable of a resolution of 1366x768 and won't give you the clarity that a much smaller monitor does.
