Hi Guys, I just bought a GTX 660 card and it's too tall for my htpc case. I also bought a PNY gtx660 ti card from Dell, that I was going to send back. But since the 660 doesn't fit, I want to try the TI (it's lower) , however that one requires 2 6 pin plugs, which I have, but it states it needs a 500-550 watt psu?

Only thing I have plugged into it is MOBO, AMD A8 3870k APU, a SSD and a 3.5" Sata HD, and USB x6

Since the CPU only draws 100, and the HD's not much more, would I be ok?

PSU is Cooler Master GX Series 450W 80+ Bronze Power Supply (RS450 ACAAD3 US)

Your power supply seems to be rated for 420 watts @ 12 volts. Reviews seem to show it as working ok(unlike some other coolermaster units that blow).

With reviews showing even overclocked 660 ti's not passing much over 160 watts, I would say you have a good chance.

I would certainly not want to try to overclock that system.

The extreme PSU calc also puts you in the green(not with much to spare, but it tends to aim a bit higher too.).

Ok, I'll try it, the 660ti is actually cheaper after the dell deal going right now than the 660, I bought the 660 after the ti was shipped, when I realized the wattage issue...but sounds like I should be ok....

Worst case, what can happen if something get's underpowered?? Will it shut me down automatically? or will something fry?

If I trust the reviews, That power supply will shut off and not burn out parts of the system.

They do have LOTS of cheap power supplies that will take out a full system. This is one reason why the request higher power supplies.

When if doubt go with more power OR get a kilo-watt or similar meter to see how much power a system is using. Remember that the AC in is ALWAYS higher then the DC out. so if you see 300 watts AC, the power supply is under 300 watts.

You can also reduce system power consumption by using frame rate limits in games or even vsync as it will lock the frame rate at 60.

Idle power should be nothing.

Also, If a company places 2 pci-e connectors on the power supply, it should be able to deliver the power required.

Well I threw in the PNY 660ti, it works, windows index 7.9...wow...tried Hitman Absolution at max settings 1080p...fluid frame rates... all is well, so far. Only problem is, the card power ports are on top so HTPC case top panel still hits the power cords...dammit...so now it's either buy a low-profile card, or a new case, and transfer everything over....
Are lo-profile cards ok? seems like it's a higher risk of overheating?

Can't see a single glitch with Ultra Settings 1080p on Hit-man, so maybe get a shorter 660 instead of TI should suffice? And at the same time go back to the safe 1 6 pin plug...

Another thing I cannot figure out...Why do 80% of Nvidia based cards use MiniHDMI? What TV/Projector utilizes this? I could see it on a lower end card for mini-atx cases or something, but why are so many 2 slot cards equiped with mHDMI?

I think the smaller ports open up space for larger vents on the back of the card.

My 650ti has one of those as well(it came with the adapter either way).

Sometimes you can gently mod a plug to make it fit in place.

Low profile cards, if designed right should not over heat.

You want a tight fit huh :)
