how to connect a computer to the internet with an ethernet cable instead of wireless

I set up Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router and connected it to the cable modem and everything. Then I used an ethernet cable to connect my brother's desktop since it can't connect wirelessly. Then I wanted to connect my desktop to it, it got connected wirelessly with no problem but it is not as fast as i wanted it to be, when i play online my ping just goes off the roof for some reason. So I decided to connect it with an ethernet cable so I would get faster internet. I got Belkin Premium CAT5e Networking Cable and connected my PC and the router together and nothing happened. It kept getting connected wirelessly instead. I want to connect to the same internet network with a ethernet cord not wirelessly. Please help.
