Xbox Stealing the Bandwidth?

Hi,

Currently we have about 10 devices hitting the router including the Xbox 360 which is hardwired. There were no complaints though, until Christmas when we added a Blue Ray DVD player with wireless capability. Now, the issue seems to be whenever the kids are playing the Xbox, it is next to impossible to stream Hulu or Netflix to the TV via the DVD player's wireless. Once the Xbox is turned off, the streaming videos are fine. Question is: Would hardwiring the DVD player to the router allow both the Xbox and DVD player to run at the same time without issues or does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

That is a strange issue. This means the xbox is either using all the internet bandwidth or it is doing something to cause the router itself a issue. It would likely do the same thing even if you plug the dvd into the router....unless it a strange bug that is overloading the router and it cannot process the wireless fast enough.

If these were pc i would be looking for virus but that can't be the issue. This is the good thing about these devices they can't get a virus but they also cannot load any of the diagnostic tools you need to see what is going on.

I would try the obvious and upgrade the firmware in the router and hope to get lucky its a bug. If not you need to determine if the xbox is consuming internet bandwidth and/or it is...

If not you need to determine if the xbox is consuming internet bandwidth and/or it is sending traffic to the router and other devices in your network. All depends how advanced a router you have. Some will tell you i/o rates and such so you can tell which ports are using bandwidth. If the router has the feature you may also try to block the xbox with a rule to prevent it from access the internet. This would at least tell you if the problem was overutilization of the internet or some other hardware issue with the connection to the xbox. You could have a bad cable or bad port but it is highly unlikely.
