Hello,

Can someone please advise, what could be the maximum power load for this configuration, considering overclocking cpu,gpu may be involved. I have looked up newegg.com for power calculator and it gave me recommended, 543W

Intel i5 3470
MSI P67A GD65 (B3) motherboard
AMD Radeon HD 7950 3 GB boost GPU
Corsair Vengeance 2 x 4 GB DDR 3 1600 MHZ
2 x 500 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD
1 LG DVD RW
Cooler Master Elite 311 Cabinet

Thank you so much

Regards,

Solution
For a system using a single Radeon HD 7950 with Boost graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 30 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) rated at 45°C - 50°C ambient temperature, is the most critical factor.

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) will require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings...

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) will require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings, recommended above, to meet the increase in power required for the overclock. The additional amount required will depend on the magnitude of the overclock being attempted. When overclocking the Radeon HD 7950 with Boost BIOS the power consumption does increase dramatically so I would suggest at least an additional 7 Amps on the +12 Volt rail to handle that. I don't think you'll get much, if any, overclock from a locked Intel i5-3470 CPU.

Some PSUs that would meet the minimum requirement:

Seasonic S12II-520 Bronze
• maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 40 Amps
• one 6-pin and one (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors

Seasonic M12II-520 Bronze
• maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 40 Amps
• one 6-pin and one (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors
• semi-modular output cables

I would recommend:

Seasonic S12II-620 Bronze
• maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 48 Amps
• one 6-pin and one (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors

Seasonic M12II-650 Bronze
• maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 53 Amps
• four (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors
• semi-modular output cables
