Recently I had to replace the fan in my current laptop and bought two upgrades besides the replacement to do while the laptop was disassembled. My laptop is a 2007 inspiron 1520 that I have played quite a few games on and while not top notch performance it got the job done. It originally came with a Intel Core Duo T7250 with an Nvidia geforce 8600m GS graphics card with 128mb of dedicated ram and 2 gigs of system ram. I upgraded to the Intel core Duo T8300 and Geforce 8600m GT which should theoretically improve the performance of the computer by a decent amount.

Before I switched the parts I could minecraft with optifine on normal viewing distance and at relatively stable 30fps. Accidentally I had forgotten to uninstall the drivers for the previous card before installing the new one and had the computer not recognize the new card. This was after having a hard disk error I had to repair before getting the computer up and running. It was after this that I discovered that while initially the fps I would get in minecraft would be slightly higher than with my old card it would drag down into the 3-10 fps range in 10-30 seconds of play. It would occasionally jump back up into normal 30s range or into the 70s before going back to the painfully low range.

So I did what I could, I re-installed both minecraft and java without change, changed versions of the card driver with clean installs and checked the heat coming off the cpu, gpu, and motherboard. So far nothing seems to be wrong except that the card worsen performance when it is tapped more usage. Temperatures never rose above 60c for the cpu or gpu, and the mobo only ever peaked to 68c and the fan works just fine. Naturally frustrated and believing I had a flawed card I swapped out the new card for the old card today intending to return it to where I bought it from, except this problem is now occurring on my old card as well!

I am starting to believe that the cards are fine, but it's the cpu that might be faulty and causing a bottleneck limiting frames. When I had installed the new cpu, I scrapped off the old thermal paste and applied some AS5 to the top like I was supposed to, but scratched the copper of the heat sink slightly with no depth to them, which makes it hard for me to believe is the root of the problem. I took my time during the install of the parts and followed the instructions carefully so I don't think I damaged any part of the components. I posted a few other places looking for help with my problem but no one was been able to give any advice.

Short version for those that don't want to read all the way through the wall of text:
-Swapped old cpu and gpu for a more powerful new gpu and good used cpu

-Forgot to completely unistall nvidia drivers for old gpu, laptop had to repair hard disk errors before starting and did not recognize gpu.

-Big loss of fps in favorite game that played well before.

-Re-installed both minecraft and java, no affect.

-Updated drivers of gpu, normal, complete uninstall then reinstall, and clean install from driver, no effect.

-Tried to limit os affects that could be compromising gpu performance, AA, powermizer, and integrated gpu in mobo (no gpu there)

-Revert to older card that worked well before, problems are present still.

-Checked operating temperatures of components, all below 60c and mobo only reaching 68c tops.

-Think problem could stem from used cpu, but normal computer use is working good.

True, but the inspiron 1520's parts are not soldered directly to the mother board, any many people have successfully put different parts in. Only the cpu is used, the gpu and fan are new
