I know it's old but it's the back up for my laptop and as long as it's working I though I'd like to put in a faster chip and a video card. It's so old they are cheap but the problem is finding a socket 478 CPU. The Northwood 3.0Ghz was the one I wanted but it's hard to find.

Who is actually running a faster CPU or knows of someone that did that works in a 2350 and is still available ??

I would say buy a whole new setup. Spending any kind of cash unless its $10 on a system that old is pointless in my opinion. Especially when you can go on craigslist and buy a core2duo or quad setup for less than $50. But hey who am I to judge, if you want the fastest you could spend close to $100 getting a P4 3.4ghz extreme.

These are the 3 fastest ever released for the 478 socket:

The problem is, there is nothing you can buy that will make much impact on this old system. No matter what you find or do to upgrade, its still going to be an old slow system, it will take more than just a faster CPU (a new video card is pretty much pointless too) to breath new life into it. The entire platform is just too outdated.

I have on several occasions put faster chips in seriously outdated systems and found it in general to be a good idea, especially when you're talking a 15 - 25 $ upgrade as opposed to several hundred for a new system from the ground up. I can't talk for your intel in particular, but I've upgraded several AMD systems from single core to dual or quad core chips while upgrading RAM and for a small amount of money, made a terrible EMail machine into a bearable EMail machine. (my parents love theirs) If you don't use your computer much you'll notice a difference in speeds and for the 20$ that can be worth it. I hate buying used processors, but EBay can be your friend, and there are LOTS of used chips for cheap on EBay.

^ Agreed. Even if you can find a 3.4Ghz P4 and the BIOS supported it ( doubtful since it's an OEM ) you would still not be able to do high def video with it. It's just too old and slow.

Plus I've been ripping DVD's into a hard drive library and I'd rather shift the chore from my laptop to this dog. Toss it in and forget it.

But .... I'm starting to think a duocore might be easier and cheaper. Just hate to toss the oil dog out.
