First time overclocker

I got an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition processor and a GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 motherboard with an Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W PSU. Using the stock cooler for the CPU which I've read a lot of reviews of people overclocking with without any troubles, some using it for 3+ years like that.

So I'd like to know what is a safe overclock number for it with the stock? Default is 3.1GHz. And since I'm a total newbie at this, I could use a bit of a walk-through for this since I have no clue where to start lol.

Any help will be very appreciated.
 
I recommend you read as many reviews on that cpu and see what overclocks/settings they hit. That is the best way to start. The only things you will need to concentrate on in your BIOS is the cpu multiplier (changes clock speed) and the cpu voltage (gets the cpu the juice it needs for the faster clocks). I also recommend a new heatsink (CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO is a great cooler for the money) as the stock one can get loud when upping the voltage. Start by upping the cpu multiplier one step at a time until it is unstable when benchmarking. There is a ton of free software you can use to fully load your cpu. Core Temp is what I use to read temps with. I know this wasn't a walk through, but hopefully its enough to get you started.

GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 is a rubbish board for overclocking, i tried to overclock a simple ram, didnt work. had the mother board but has now packed up and cant be revived..right now i am getting the GA-990FXA-UD5, according to reviews and suggestions from fellow forumers good board for overclocking. but trust me the GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 is a budget mobo not a overclocking mobo. i got screwed buying it

since every system (every electronical piece) is unique even the same builds doesnt work with the same overclocking style. what you should be searching is not the safe limit, safe range for overclocking.

read some about your cpu/board for overcloking results and decide yourself and experiment (but an aftermarket cooler is exclusively recommended which will drop your temps and lets you do more overclocking) your temperatures with slight voltage changes. try not to pass 80C in stress tests, 65-70C in daily usage/gaming.

good luck
