This mobo is CROSSFIRE only. The top PCI slot is X16 but second slot is listed at X4.

I was considering getting 2 7970's but I am unsure if it is even worth it with this mobo.

Would I be wasting performance with the second X4 PCI slot?

I was considering a GTX 690 but 2 7970's was $200 cheaper and from the benchmarks I've seen, a bit stronger.

Solution
The graphics card on the PCI-E x16 @ x16 blue slot is directly connected to the CPU whereas the second graphics card in the PCI-E x16 @ x4 black slot is connected to the Intel Z68 Express Chipset so CrossFire performance will never be optimal.

Also the PCI-E x16 @ x4 black slot shares its bandwidth with the two PCI-E x1 slots.
