Will vibrating hard drive damage it?

Hi, so my computer is in my room which is above our family's dryer. When the dryer starts my whole room vibrates including my computer. I was wondering if i should be concerned about my hard drive being damaged. (It vibrates pretty hard for about 30 sec)

It may or may not. LOL not exactly a great answer. It probably won't but it could.

Trying to fix the dryer might be in order. A dryer shakes and vibrates when it is not level. There should be leveling legs that you screw in or unscrew to move the height of the legs. If that doesn't work a wooden or folded cardboard under the legs sometimes works.

Vibration can cause read/write failures increasing latency.

However, I suspect the vibrations you're complaining about from a dyer are too low frequency to cause these types of errors. The movement will increase stress on the bearings - a platter spinning at 7200 rpm has a lot of angular momentum, and offers a lot of resistance to being moved. All that resistance is directed at the bearings, and will probably cause them to wear out prematurely.

Rather than try to isolate the drives, I'd try to isolate the case to take advantage of the additional mass of the entire computer. A loosely folded blanket underneath the computer should decouple it enough from the floor's vibration to eliminate the worst of the stresses from the vibration. That's what they do with new skyscrapers built in earthquake-prone areas.

It's probably won't break it outright, but it will reduce the lifespan of the drive. Take Solandri's advice and isolate the main box as much as possible. Also mount the drive with rubber grommets if possible.
