Setting up a Persional Network

Hi,

Currently at home my family use a talktalk huawei router, this router cant be changed as its set up to receive fiber optic broadband (stipulated by the isp). My family all connect to it via wireless. What i would like to do is set up a 'private' network in my room.

My idea is to run an Ethernet cable from the router to my room and attach a switch or a hub to it and create a wireless and wired access point and connect all my devices in my room to it via Ethernet and wireless. in effect creating a network in my room and using the current router as access to the internet.

What i will also be doing is using an old laptop and an external drive as an ftp server as well in my room, ill use filezilla server most likely to run this.

What my question is really, is as i am sure its possible, but what switch hub, and access point should i buy, preferably cheap and wireless n.

Secondly once i create the network would i still be able to access my old laptop via ftp through the router and into my network.

I hope this all makes sense.

Ok so i assume i have an old router laying about that i will use, i assume as the current router connected to the internet has an ip of 192.168.1.1 i should assign an ip address to the second router in my room 192.168.2.1 possibly?

Cant find anything to do with DMZ on the current router?

This links to screen shots very similar to my current router connected to the internet the only differences being my router doesn't have a dns domain under the DHCP server and under the advanced section i also have VLAN

no cross-over cable required

if your main router does not have DMZ, you do not need to assign an IP to the secondary router' WAN, just leave it on Automatic. Just make sure that the LAN IP scheme of the secondary router is different for the main one.

Main router's LAN IP 192.168.1.1 then the LAN IP of the second router in your room should be 192.168.2.1.

you probably have to play around with the port forwarding on both routers to get the FTP to work.

Thank you. I am wanting to connect the 2 routers together via Ethernet cable as this will enable me to take full advantage of the fibre-optic broadband. So why not a crossover?
