depends what it's intended use;

CPU intensive tasks like VMs, rendering, etc. ; decent enough though you gain a bit going with a GPU in some of the more visual related tasks.

Gaming: bad.

General usage, i.e; web browsing, paperwork, basic multimedia needs; overkill.

i assume this is a prebuilt which i reckon you are limited in choices. if you're looking for a better value and are open to building on your own, please fill in this form;

1. your built is not effective...huge overkill for multimedia... but bad for gaming or rendering due to your GPU choice.

2. 12GB is not really optimal for 3770 system. Mobos for 3770 have always only 2 channels RAM.
You should only have either 4GB, 8GB or 16GB and not 6GB, 12GB...and so on...those 6, 12, etc. are 3 channels...

It would not be used for gaming. Browsing web, music, producing yearbook for the school I work at, making videos involving pictures and short video clips, Word use, Excel, classes online, etc. To give you an idea. I need a new computer pronto and it is not a package. You pick components on the HP website. I just need it asap and want to spend no more than $1200.

Hi. So would you go with 8 GB or 16 GB? What would you change to make it more effective? It is not for gaming. Please see reply i posted to other member in regards to use of computer. Thank you for your help and time.

If you are not going to be using it for gaming, or much video rendering type tasks, you should not need an i7.
Look for a lower priced i5 or even i3 as they will not make much difference in performance online and listening to music and will save you hundreds.

One thing at a time:

1. If you go gaming, i5 3570k would be your best solution at the moment. If you render stuffs, I would place my bed depending on my budget either on FX8350 or i7 3770k. If you do just internet, words, movies...I would say even an i3 is sufficient.

2. You will need a dedicated GPU for both gaming and rendering. For gaming and lite redering I like at least HD7850 for now and for rendering you would like to look at those with CUDA cores or perhaps any of those professional GPUs. depends on your budget and usage plan.

3. As for RAM, for gaming 8GB is enough but for rendering you might want something more. 16GB would fit more.
If you just browse in internet, hearing some mp3, hearing some movies...4GB RAM should be already sufficient.

The main things here is missing...1. usage plan...2. budget

1. wow wow wait! HP? are you thinking to get a pre-built? I would prefer to build my own PC. You will get better components for the same price and you know what is inside (what you built)...buying pre-build is like buying a cat in a sack.

2. looks like a normal usage for me...FX8350 and i5 3570k will do just fine...even i3 will do just fine...you sure you ain't gaming in the future? With USD1200 you can get an awesome gaming machine

3. Avoid S and T processors such as 3770S, 3570T, etc. those are lame in my opinion. I just noticed it just now from your original post.

4. Did you already have a PC, perhaps there are things you can salvage such as HDD, case, etc. ?

OK, here is my recommendation, meanwhile I will create something you can play games on. I will also try to build something which will last for about 5 years before you ned to upgrade it seriously. Try to check how much does it cost where you live, if it is going out of USD1200, we can make adjustments:
i5 3570k (go down to i5 3470 if you are short of budget)
Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H
8GB DDR3 1600 RAM G.Skill Ripjaws
XFX HD7850 core edition (get rid of this if you do not plant to play games at all, the on-board one is enough for your activities and you can always add a GPU anytime you want)
1TB Seagate 7200.14
Corsair 500CX
Any case you want
Win7 or Win8 x64 home (if you need a copy)
For other peripherals, you can pick what you want (blue-ray drive, keyboard, speakers, monitor, card readers, etc.).

Note:
If you do not know to build your own PC, I have 3 solutions instead of buying a pre-built:
1. Ask someone who can to built for you
2. Ask someone to guide you directly live while you doing it
