Hello. I've looked everywhere for some answers to my problem. I just built a fairly powerful computer for audio editing. I skipped on the graphics card because of that reason and will get one in the future. I have an i7-3770k with no overclocking done. I tried to download Minecraft, which isn't very graphics intensive. So what the heck, the CPU should handle it fine. It runs for fifteen seconds, then the computer locks up completely. Only way to turn it off is through the power button. I've switched OS's. Tried different games. Tried different drivers. It's not a heat problem. I've ran memtest86 for twelve hours with no issues, so my RAM is fine also.

Will getting a graphics card fix this issue? I'm stuck.

mindcraft is a game that not well written...i would try using unreal game demo to see if the system with the onboard gpu still locks up. one thing to also do is go into your mb bios and set the onboard gpu ram size to it max. most mb default to 64 megs which is ok for web. try setting it to it max size. also make sure on the new build you have the newest intel chipset and ipgpu drivers installed. but as you posted intel 4000 gpu is ok for some games but you still cant beat a nvidia or ati gpu.

I should have mentioned it wasn't just Minecraft. Half-Life 2 locked my computer up also. I get into the game, it runs lag free, then locks up. Geometry Wars, plays just fine though.

I scanned all through my bios looking for a setting to change the memory for the integrated GPU, but I only found the IGPU Voltage, which is set to 'Auto'. I also downloaded the latest drivers. Still locking up. It happens instantaneous also, no slow down or anything.

Will getting a dedicated card definitely fix this issue?

Fixed by reinstalling the BIOS.
