WiFi Repeater Signal Problem

Yesterday I received a WiFi repeater that I had ordered from Amazon, and after I had completed the setup I experienced problems with the signal between the repeater and my main router.

1) Signal drops occasionally between my laptop and the repeater
2) Internet connection is considerably slower when connected to the repeater (about 10% of the speed I get from my main router - speedtest.net) although the wireless signal is perfect when testing both
3) I can only access the config page on the repeater BEFORE it is setup to the existing WiFi. As soon as I've set it up, I cannot access it anymore.

When running the setup for the repeater it shows that the connection to my existing WiFi is 100%, so the signal seems to be fine.

The repeater I bought is this an equivalent of this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Repeater-amplifier-including-connection-standards/dp/B006CKWZT6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1363604988&sr=8-2 -
and my router is a Thomson TWG870U with the latest firmware. The distance between the two are less than 10m and my laptop is in between them both.

I'm starting to think the product itself (the repeater) is just a piece of junk. However, I would very much appreciate of someone knew what the problem could be!

Thanks in advance,

It is normal that you can't access it over WLAN when you configure it on repeater mode because it only amplifies signal from your router and Repeater does not act as network point of any kind.

Repeater is piece of junk but maybe, just maybe you could make it work.

When you ran speedtest.net what was your ping on repeater?

Also, does your repeater discovers other wirelless networks?

Okay, then one of the points are cleared up! The ping from the repeater was about 30ms, while the regular WiFi was about 20ms. The repeater also discovers all wireless networks in the proximity.

Okay. It would be best if you see on what channels are those other networks and you should setup your router to transmitt signal at least 5 channels away (up or down) from channel that is used most on other networks. That's how you'll limit your interference as much as possible.

I've tried to change the channel, but on my router I can only choose Auto or within the range 1-9. Usually in auto mode the router uses channel 11, but right now it's on channel 1. A Wifi diagnostics on my Macbook reveals that there are 17 networks (including my own) in the area. To me that seems like a lot, and most of them are on channels 1 and 11, and a couple on 3 and 6.

EDIT: Can now see 25 wireless networks.

I've done that now, however, I'm not sure if the settings reset when I run the setup wizard in order for the repeater to connect to the main router. Ping with main router in the 3-5ms range (no timeouts), repeater 3-10ms and timeouts almost a couple of times per minute.

Running on channel 3 now, it's the least crowded at the moment.

How close is repeater to router when you are configuring repeater?

Have you checked repeater signal to router when is 10 meters away?

It should not be timing out. If you are on channel 3 you are still having interference from channel 1 which is crowded. However Channel 6 will have interference from channels 2-10 only (5 channels up and down).

Router->Repeater, one floor up, 5m distance. Repeater->Laptop, same floor as repeater, 5m. So should definitely be fine right? Changed to channel 6 and now the ping goes completely nuts. I have the feeling that the device is not working properly or it's just a terribly bad piece of equipment.

Thank you for your help!

That one seems to have gotten some good reviews, and it's even cheaper than the one I bought! I'll try and return the malfunctioning one and buy that the other one instead. Thanks again for the help.
