Okay, PC stopped working yesterday. Symptoms led me to believe PSU went bad. So I paper clipped it. Yes green and black connected, yes a fan was attached, as was a fan and drive. Nothing spun up. But I did get a noise when when I switched the supply off. It was a winding down noise type noise.

Is that normal? And now I am 100% sure my PSU is dead.

I ordered a CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 600W ATX12V v2.3 80. An 80$+, unit on sale for 57$ with a 20$ mail in rebate on top...Can't beat that. Hope its quiet like I've read, and cooler.

Not sure what my old one is/was. Its a 550w Power up atx switching power supply. Can't find any info online about it, and had it for at least five years. I know the new one is better, but I dont know how much better. Can anyone now shed some light on that?

It is 80+ certified.
The old one I had I just found was a, PowerUp! GEN-2004 550 Watt ATX Power Supply - 120mm Fan.
Im powering an Asus M3n78pro MB, gtx550ti, Athlon x2 3.0ghz, 3 fans, and sound card. Nothing is overclocked. Over the last 7 years I have spent thousands, on upgrades (inside and outside of PC), and don't want to mess with overclocking and fry everything I have now.

Edit: Now that I think of it the GPU did come slightly OC'ed in the box.

Hmm. didnt notice that. But, in newegg it states that it is 80+ cert... So I'll find out.
Oh yeah I know I'll be fine. If the old PSU held up this long, there is no doubt this new one shouldn't as well. I'm just crossing fingers I dont get a DOA.

So without opening a new thread. Is there a way to check if mobo is fully operational (<---proof that "Star Wars" is a part of everyday life.)
I looked at it an see no burns or blown caps. Problem is I have no access to another PSU right now. I just wonder if there is some DIY method to test without one. And without paying a tech to take a look. Im in collage and a single father, so money is very tight. If I can do it myself that would be perfect.

And thank you for your responses so far everyone (2).

I stand corrected. It seems I was on an old page.

Really a problem with navigating on Corsairs site, not easily defining between the different versions. Has happened to me as well.
