Hi all, after 4 years I've decided that its time to upgrade my pc (or buy a whole new one, which is one of my dilemmas). I havent been keeping up-to-date since I put together my current rig so I'm a bit lost on where to start and what to upgrade/scrap.

My current specs are as follows:

Intel(R) Core 2 Quad CPU Q9300 @2.50GHz
2x Corsair DDR2 2GB Ram (its actually 4Gb total but i'm still using windows xp, i know i'm that lazy)
Asus P5Q Pro Motherboard
Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 260
Samsung HD103UJ 500GB sata drive (i think...)
Asus Xonar DX soundcard

Forgive my ignorance but like i said i put this thing together 3-4 years ago and I cant find the original boxes/paperwork to give you the exact model numbers, once i restart the pc i'll also put down my power supply.

Now, my first question is this, do I have anything worth saving/upgrading? like for example the motherboard? and if its worth keeping will it be compatible with the high-end processors/gfx cards that are on the market currently?

My general uses for the computer are browsing, word/excel for work/study, high-def movies, and working with multiple programs at once, I usually have my BS player always on while working or playing a game, i play most of my games windowed just for that purpose.

Feel free to post an 'upgraded' spec or a whole new one, my budget is around 700-800 euros not including the monitor, keyboard and mouse since I'm happy with what I already have, my dvd-write drive is also in a pretty good condition so I dont think i'll need a new one, and the blu-ray writers are still a bit too expensive to be value for money spent.

Thanks in advance for any helpful input provided!!

As wanderer11 stated the GPU is about the only thing to upgrade - I would only upgrade components that you could use in a new build.

For a new build, which is well under your est available funds.
CPU i5-3570K, $219: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116504
MB, Z77, $ 120: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128542
GPU a HD 6870 or equiv for approx. $150
Ram: DDR3-1600 $ 62: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
Cost: 530 USD. You should find this at about the same price but in pounds So 530 quid which is approx. 1.5 X USD

You did not indicate the PSU - Min required is about 450 Watts, recommended 550->650 - BUT quallity trumps wattage. This should be a Quality PSU, not a PSU best used to prop a door open.

Also, A SSD Would provide a significant boast to OS LOAD and program load (about 40x faster than a HDD) cost about 100 pounds for a (my recommended choices) - Crucial M4, samsung 830, Plextor M3/M5 or a samsung 840 (non-pro).

Could you tell us what sort of games you play! Also if you want a new CPU then you will most likely need a new motherboard, if you go through with this route then I would recommend an I5-3570K or an FX-6300 with 4GB or 8GB of ram!
