Can anyone help my computer specs are:

Motherboard: MSI 760GM-P23
CPU: AMD FX 4170
GPU: Asus Geforce Gtx 660Ti
PSU: OCZ ModXstream-Pro 600W
RAM: 8GB Corsair not sure what speed

I want to upgrade my CPU but my MB only allows a 95W CPU and i am unsure of what CPU to get, i want to use it for gaming.

Thanks in Advance.

According to this its a waste of money to buy the 6300 if you have a 4170.

http://www.techspot.com/review/586-amd-fx-8350-fx-6300/page6.html

I know this will start fights which I'm NOT trying to do. If you want more FPS which CPUs in that chart will give them to you? The 3470 and 2500 from Intel are at the top of those charts. You can try to OC what you have but if you want more frames you really need a system upgrade. Not a new CPU.

I agree 100%!!!! Why go up a little, you have to remember that its going to save you tremendous money just to get the best, go for the 8350 :D

Im curious about how your motherboard only allows 95w CPUs but with work with an 8120 even though it's a 125w CPU...

I really don't think you'll notice anything if you were to upgrade from the 4170 to the 6300. Tom's did a review of CPUs under $200 and there was little to no difference between them. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-processor-frame-rate-performance,3427.html.

What makes you want to upgrade right now? Are you unhappy with current performance? Do you game?

Yes i game and i am unhappy with the performance, i saw a post someone made who had the same MB as me who tried using an AMD FX 8350 but his computer kept crashing thats why im not sure if i should still buy the 8350.

IF your MB cant support the 8350 i suggest an upgrade because thats old, upgradeing the MB and to the 8350 will boost a lot

Can you give me an MB that is the same size of my MB because my gaming case isnt very big it will just about fit the motherboard i already have.

On average, the FX 6300 is about 7.7% faster than the FX 4170 in games. The FX 8300 is the fastest your board will support, however, nobody can seem to find one so that leaves you with the 6300.

i dont see the point in gettin the AMD FX 6300 for an 7.7% performance increase, can anyone suggest what MB can handle the AMD FX 8350 but i need it to be the same size as my MB.

The point I was trying to make is that if you are going to buy a new MB and CPU anyways you might as well get one near the top of those charts. According to that chart above the 2120 is ~14% faster then what you have now, ~6% faster then the 6300, and ~3% faster then the 8350. If you get the 3470 you'll be much faster then those. (I believe it games faster then the 2500 so use that for a reference point.) If you are gaming and spending $150 for a 6300 or $180 for a 8350 you are buying the wrong CPUs.

Question is, how much are you willing to spend and do you have a microcenter nearby?

Points:
1) If you're going to replace the motherboard, you might as well go Intel and get the i5-3570K (or similar) CPU and a Z77 1155 motherboard.

2) When you replace the motherboard you will be required to purchase a new copy of Windows since it's very likely you have an "OEM" copy. That's more money (if so, get Windows 8 64-bit and Start8 from Stardock. Windows 8 is a big improvement such as Secure Boot to prevent boot-time malware hacking like key-logging.)

3) The performance increase will vary significantly depending on the game. Many games are more GPU-dependent so keep that in mind as you may not see much difference in many games. Plus, if you can achieve 60FPS at near full quality anyway don't upgrade. I often tell people to just tweak a little rather than spending a lot of money.

4) If you do go with Intel, you'll need a new cooler (don't use Stock) but that's not a huge part of the upgrade price.

5) *Unless you can achieve a significant improvement by upgrading ONLY the CPU, my advice is WAIT and build a completely new system in a couple years. I find it difficult to recommend spending a lot of money when you currently have a fairly nice rig (not the best, but still quite good relatively speaking). Do a few small game quality tweaks and any game should play quite nicely.

Cheers.
