I have the strangest problem and am at the end of my tether, so would appreciate any input

I have a Asus P6X58D-E board with an Intel i7 930. This has been running happily for almost 2 years with a Nvidia 2GB Palit GTX 460 gfx card.

I had a problem where when I switched it on all the fans spun as fast as they could and the BIOS produced no beep codes. This would happen 3 or 4 times then it started to spin the fans at a normal speed but produce a beep code. 1 long 3 short.

I looked this up and it suggested GFX card.

I opened it up took the card out, checked it was ok, reseated it and started. Straight into Windows and happy. Played games, watched videos the usual stuff all fine. Shut it down and next day same problem. Reseated the card, and it booted first time. Tried a restart, fine, did a few more, all fine. Shut it down and waited 5 seconds, back to fast fans and beep codes.

Reseated the card, boots first time.

System is stable as long as I don't shut it down. Have swapped to the second PCI express slot to see if that cured it.....it didn't.

Have changed the battery on the motherboard, same problem. Have unplugged the power leads and reseated them, nothing.

Have unplugged all external devices, nothing.

The only thing that works is to take the card out, and put it back in. I pray someone has an idea as I am about to start lobotomising the lot.

Only thing that it could be from what I know is that the mobo is being stressed somehow. Remove everything and set the board etc up outside the case.
Give it a test.

If it works, your mobo is probably being stressed/warped in the chassis. After you rebuild the PC the stressing should be relieved. If not, then you may have a short SOMEWHERE.
