Suddenly, the file items (documents, pictures etc.) have started getting an icon of a shield and a recycle bin super imposed on them. It happens all of a sudden, they disappear after reboot only to reappear after a while.

Any idea what this might be and/or what program is causing it?

Well I know the shield mean that the file needs admin access to change, but as for the recycle bin, I'm not sure. My best guess would be that maybe the file was thrown away and then restored?

Try changing the icon manually via the properties of the file and then saving the settings with a log-off/shutdown.

Well it happens to all the files saved on my desktop. And it happens repeatedly - so it can't be because they were deleted and restored (not by me anyway). It doesn't happen to folders or shortcuts.

If you have admin on the computer, try and go into the control panel and give yourself complete admin onto the computer. Then change the file security to make them the least protected, and allow all files to execute changes without your permission. Let me know if the shield goes away.

Try running a Scan With Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I already have full permission and all the files are tagged with "full control" in the security settings (none of the files are executable).

Also ran complete scans with Malwarebytes and Norton 360 but nothing came up.

It's not something I can't live with - it's just a nuisance really.
