Hey,

How’s it going?
I am looking for some help upgrading a 2 year old server, which will be reimaged with Windows Server 2008 Standard R2. This server will be used solely to act as basic domain controller to increase security and to run a specific electronic medical records and practice management program from a 3rd party. We have about 15 client machines.

We used to run a SBS 2008, with exchange on the box, and for the most part it ran well until we had a series of power outages in the area and experienced the Intel software RAID check upon boot up, rendering the system useless for hours. We switched to a cloud based system and for financial reasons we are returning to hosting our own server in house. We are upgrading the drives to SSD for the OS and faster enterprise grade drives for data and are looking for a solid but reasonably priced (< $250) RAID controller that is compatible with this system that will handle the RAID configuration outlined below. Basically, 2 RAID 1 arrays: 1 with SSD’s for the OS and one for DATA.

I have checked the windows hardware compatibility website at length, but the list is overwhelming and it’s hard to find helpful reviews from people who have experience using the cards in this specific situation.

I would like to have the server ready to image by April 1st.

I prefer newegg and tigerdirect.

Any help, suggestions, or feedback is welcome.

Thank You for Your Time,

John

You have a few options. You can go with something budget (under $100) or something a little more enterprise-class. Personally, I'd go with the enterprise-class option as I've had issues with Highpoint stuff. Here are options:

LSI $250 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118133
Highpoint $70 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816115114

I would also think about moving to Samsung 840 Pro drives instead of the TLC 840's. Personal preference, but you will get more mileage out of the 840 Pro drives.

Hope this helps!
