My Dell XPS 720 H2C is about 7-Years old and I would like to replace the motherboard. Can I insert a motherboard other than a Dell brand board? I'm specifically interested in purchasing one of the Asus Maximus series motherboards.

Thank you,
Martin

On a dell, if you replace the motherbord / a non Dell motherboard, you will have to buy a new OS, the operating systems in OEM cpu's (i.e Dell, Hp, Acer, etc) are tied to the motherboard . New, different motheboard = new system & means new operating system.

Well the motherboard in your XPS 720 is a BTX form and currently all MOBOs are ATX format, which is a real bummer.

You can upgrade the 720 to an ATX board, but it requires some modifications and upgrades.

So, it is not simple motherboard swap. It is going to be a headache.
