Specs:
Case: Antec 900
PSU: Corsair HX850 850w
SSD/OS: Sandisk 120GB/Windows 8 Pro
Spare HDD: Western Digital 2TB
Motherboard: Asus Rampage Gene IV x79
Processor: Intel i7 3930k
GPU: Gigabyte 7970 ghz Edition
RAM: G-Skill 1600 Mhz 2x8GB

I built this just a week ago and it's already run into some issues. Mainly overheating for some odd reason.
It's using an intel stock fan that I received when I ordered a bundle which came with the MB, RAM, and CPU and so far it seems to be working fine(although I ordered another one).

But during something like Battlefield 3 even on medium or low graphics the processor pretty much goes into overdrive and the fan kicks up to max. Even with the fan at max the CPU temperature rises to approximately 150 degrees fahrenheit or 66 degrees celsius(it's gone a few degrees higher on occasion also).
GPU temperature for comparison never goes above 115(45 Celsius) fahrenheit.

There's a 200mm fan right above the CPU and it sucks out any hot air the CPU generates but it doesn't seem to help.

I also play Arma 2 which has the worst calibrated engine known to man and the processor temp or the fan speed never rise on any graphic setting.

Is it BF3 specific? I'm planning on playing Crysis 3 and the new Bioshock will those melt my CPU?

Possible answers:
The CPU fan isn't seated properly, thought about this and double checked it, it's seated as firmly as possible.

GPU is blowing hot air over your CPU(fans are facing the opposite direction).

Get a new fan, already did but it won't arrive til Monday, BF3 can't wait dammit D:<

Could it be resolution based? I'm using an old TV from like... 2003 connected using an HDMI to DVI adapter(tv has the DVI side). And my resolution is like... 1280x720.

BB code didn't like me so I'll just a URL of my PC here.

LED says AA btw.

And it is a bit of a tangled mess but I made sure none of the wires interfere with the fans.

Reapply thermal paste. Intel puts their paste poorly on the cooler.

Btw 66 C is not too crazy so you should be fine until monday. I dunno why you are gaming on such a low resolution with such a beast system. Invest in a new monitor

Could be right, the thermal paste on the stock CPU fan had the consistency of... dried up pudding?
Haven't worked with thermal paste but from what I've seen pretty sure it's more like toothpaste lol.

Will find out if that was it next week.

That can't be right. There is no "Intel Stock Fan" for the SandyBridge-E processors, they're shipped without one. There is an Intel reference closed loop watercooler for the platform but the performance is atrocious. I suggest that you double check what you received.

66 degrees centigrade on the die while playing BF3 is about what I would expect from that CPU while coupled with a crummy cooler. There are separate thermometers for the cores and package, the package will always be cooler so check and see what it's measuring. That is warm, but it is not too hot for that CPU to handle. The CPU will throttle back when the cores hit 90 and shut off entirely if thermals do not decrease.

Keep in mind that in comparison to the regular SandyBridge processors, the six core SandyBridge-E processors have half again as many IA-32 cores, twice as many memory lanes, and two and a half times as many PCIe lanes. They're extremely powerful power hogs.

Part number for the fan is....
None of the part numbers are adding up, none of them come up on google so now I have no idea where the fan came from. I just didn't expect it to overheat in that little time, I have RealTemp which alerts me whenever the CPU hits a certain point and it hits it after about ~15 minutes of gameplay and after about ~30 the mouse starts stuttering from time to time and the internet starts getting a bit dodgy.

It's Amazon shipping to an APO in Germany so can't really expect rapid shipping T_T

That's the cooler I'm going with, I was debating going with liquid cooling but wasn't sure if I had space for it. Didn't realize there was a fan port on the side door which was probably made for that. /facepalm

One thing that wasn't mentioned here is that the Asus X79 motherboards (I assume that you mean Rampage IV Gene, not Maximus IV Gene which is socket 1155, not socket 2011) remove some of the thermal constraints on the SandyBridge-E processors by default. In particular, they remove the bin caps which are designed to keep the processors operating within TDP. Instead, they run all processors at the maximum turbo boost bin which turns a 3/3/4/5/6/6 processor into a 6/6/6/6/6/6 processor. In short, your 3930k processor will run at 3.8Ghz until it reaches the throttle point.

By comparison, my 3960x which has a TDP of 130 watts draws 230 watts under Intel Burn Test conditions at 4.5Ghz.

Thanks for clearing the confusion I'll update first post in a moment.
If that's it I might just get a new board, hopefully one that's more crossfire compatible, this ones a bit cramped. (didn't know it was a micro-ATX board when I bought it).

I'll run some tests when the new cooler comes in and see if that's the issue. Just priority shipped some thermal paste should be here the same day as the cooler hopefully.

Planning to, going to pick up a few 27"'s once I get some more cash, this is just a holdover monitor until I buy a new one.
