reinstall of windows and keeping installed programs and games that are installed on a secondary hard drive installed when the installation is complete. for ex do i need to copy reg files or something ive tried before to re install and just copy shortcuts to desktop but the installed dont work properly again.

im reinstalling because im changing mobo going from
MSI 970A-G45 AMD 970 Socket AM3+
To
ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+ AMD 990FX

Solution
Hi :)

If your reinstall includes a format (it should)... then NONE of those programs on your second drive will work UNTIL they are reinstalled from disc etc...

All the best Brett :)

well that sucks i hate having to reinstall. Microsoft needs to make a way to be able to keep installed programs and games on secondary drives to where you wont have to reinstall. Maybe just have to back up registry's or something. oh well tomorrow after work im going to have to spend ALL day reinstalling.

Hi :)

There is one trick you can use to save time...

AFTER reinstalling a program from disc, then COPY over from your D drive to your C drive the programs folder...

That way all your work (or steam games) will be there....

All the best Brett :)

sorry im jumping in a old thread here - but is the whole problem because you have two drives with installed programs?
i have changed motherboards and processors leaving the windows installation intact - you do not need to reinstall - windows readjusts itself at first startup, just reinstall the chipset etc. drivers... or windows won't recognise the programs on the 2nd drive anymore? - i might need to do smth like that in the future that's why im askin...
