Atheros Wifi Card Not Working

Hello All!

I've had a problem that has been going on for months now that now needs to be fixed.

I have an Acer Aspire 532h-2588 Netbook. It worked fine when we bought it back in 2011- it ran Windows 7 Starter and was upgraded to Ultimate. Then Windows 8 Developer Preview came out and I put that on the PC to test it out and it worked fine. Then we decided to revert to Windows 7 (the Start Screen and the "titles" was dumb) and I went ahead and reinstalled 7. This is when problems started happening. After installing all drivers from the official Acer website (or Windows Update if they were newer), the wifi dongle would connect- but would drop the connection 30 seconds later and would be "Unable to Connect" to any other network without a system restart. Disabling the dongle in the Network Connections menu would make it disappear and device manager will also not show it either. Since I knew it was just working with Wifi on Windows 8 Dev. Preview, I just reinstalled Windows 8 and disabled the start screen and all was good for a year...

...That was until a few weeks ago. Microsoft recently made all versions of Windows 8 Developer Preview invalid and made the machines restart every 1 hour. This was extremely annoying and had no way around it. So, I reinstalled Windows 7 for what seemed like the 20th time on this machine, and of course, BAM. No wifi.

Now I'm not a tech noob, so I've pretty much tried everything. I've downloaded the drivers from Acer and re installed, I've tried to copy the drivers from Windows 8 and put them onto Windows 7 (didn't work, the driver would install successfully, but windows would still drop the connection). I've tried to download the drivers from Atheros. After all this trouble, I'm pretty much ready to replace the adapter! But, I don't want to waste it or spend the money, so I want to fix this simple software problem, and I hope you'll be able to help.

Sorry for the longest post ever!! And thanks for any help in advance on this frustrating issue!

Thanks, Scout_03 for your amazing help and efforts. I really appreciate them.

The driver detection failed to find a driver for the wifi card, but I tried the following: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/44256-63-atheros-ar9285-driver-issues-wireless ...

I'll still have to see if that fixed my problem...

Well, I give up. This is one issue that I don't think I will ever be able to solve...

Do you think this http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOSHIBA-WIFI-DUAL-BAND-2-4Ghz-5Ghz-HALF-MINI-MINICARD-WIRELESS-N-CARD-5-0-Ghz-/350613705009?pt=US_Internal_Network_Cards&hash=item51a2349131 would be a good replacement?

    Thanks,
    Sam
  7. maybe it could work but see the remaark about some amd cpu and it should be having the same pins out as the one you have, it would be a good thing to check your connector in the laptop and if you could post the number of that wireless card .
