I don't have a mini hdmi cable. so when I installed the graphics card my monitor would not come on. I took the video card off and then it worked. why is that???

did you install the cable to the motherboard or the graphics card. If you CPU has built in GPU like amd apus or intel ivy bridge and your also running a discrete graphics then you need to make sure your hooked up to the graphics card not the motherboard graphics or your monitor will not get a signal since that GPU is not on now that u introduced a discrete card.
