i set up my hitachi external hardrive on my mac computer....my mac recently stop working....i got all my info off my mac and put it on my external hardrive....plugged it into a pc and its not reconizing it at all as a open file...cant do nothing but look at properties.....is there a way to change the settings through a pc or do i have to go back to a mac to change it

That's most likely because the drive is formatted in exFAT or FAT, which Windows OS by default can only read, not write.
The easiest and safest way to use this external drive is to format the drive to NTFS (Microsoft file system), which can be read and written by Windows versions.
But, in your case, the formatting will cause data loss. You’d better put it on another MAC computer for copying off your data.
Or, you also could format it into NTFS files system on this pc and download a hard drive recovery freeware to restore you data back. But, this way may cause data loss. You should decide it carefully.
