Update MoBo BIOS for Powercolor 7870 Myst (Tahiti LE)?

I've read that several people have had to update their motherboard BIOS in order to get the Powercolor 7870 Myst Edition running, something related with the UEFI. Don't know for sure what this is about.

My MoBo is a bit older, it's an Asus M3N78-Pro, and since it runs my Phenom II 945 and 4 GB @ 1066Mhz Ram, which are enough for good gaming, don't plan on updating them soon.

However, Asus hasn't issued a BIOS update for that MoBo since 2010!

I'm about to buy this card. Will I have problems?

That card will require a bios made after Oct. 2012, had an issue with my Asrock 890FX deluxe5 it will not post without a newer bios.

@COLGeek & @Netkaos

I appreciate both your responses, but I'm still confused as the advices are opposite to each other. Would you please provide any additional argument?

Thank you for your help. I have the MYST on stock on my eyes right now, but won't fire until I know I won't have to make some major upgrades.

Since no BIOS update is available for you, this is sort of a moot point. The PCIe standard is backward compatible. The HD7870 should work in your system, as is. It will simply work in a PCIe 2.0 mode vice the PCIe 3.0 mode the GPU is capable of.

If you visit Power Color's website, check under FAQ you will see that they say Bios older than Oct 2012 will not recognize their card due to it's UFEI bios. It's not a hardware but software incompatibility, without an updated bios it's like there speaking two different languages. Please look at the second question http://powercolor.com/us/support_faq.asp

Understood. That does appear to be a generic FAQ entry that could apply to any number of video cards. You could be right.

OK, so basically I'll have problems. I'd love to ask a couple of more questions to you guys....

- Is this issue limited to the Powercolor 7870 LE? Or will I have the same problem if I decide and go for a 660 Ti?

- I've began to look for motherboards, and I've grown fond of Gigabyte's GA-970A-UD3. However, there are several revisions to this MB and you won't know what you'll get until you get it. Earlier revisions come with "Hybrid EFI", and the latest comes with UEFI. Does this have any implication? If I get an early version with "Hybrid EFI" (non-UEFI), will I be alright?

Thanks a lot guys.
