I am trying to connect a computer to my modem via Ethernet cable, but I cannot get a connection. When I plug the cable into the ethernet port on the computer, the light comes up, but when I plug the other end into the modem, the ethernet light on the modem does not light. I have tested the cable by plugging into my laptop and it worked fine. What could be the problem? I am running Windows Vista on this computer.

Also, I am able to connect via wireless with an adaptor, but for a possible job, I need a wired connection.

I have a couple of cables that I tried. They both work on the laptop and neither work on the desktop that I'm trying to connect via ethernet. My modem is a 2wire 2701HG-D. My network card in the desktop computer is NVIDIA nForce.

I tried updating the driver by downloading new software but that did not work. My computer diagnostics says the card is working. And, as I said previously, I was able to successfully connect to my laptop with the ethernet.

The modem has auto-cross-over, so the cables won't be an issue. If you verified that they work on the laptop, that is double verified.

Check your settings on the laptop for your wired connection (IP V4) (it must be plugged in), and write those settings down. Then plug in the desktop, and make sure the settings are the same.

I have the network connection details from my laptop (windows 7) but since my desktop is Vista, I can't even figure out where to go to find the same info. Ugh. I'm just a novice at this. I've been in the device manager area, but just can't find this same info.

I found the properties, and everything was checked to 'obtain automatically'. I unchecked that, and added in all the info, but that didn't make it work. Also, when you look at the Local Area connection, it flashes back and forth between 'enabled' and 'network cable is unplugged'. When I run the diagnostics it tells me to plug in a cable. But there is one plugged in.

My guess here is that you have either a hardware issue with the ethernet port, or there is an issue with the drivers.

When you right click on my computer, and go to properties and device manager, are there any items that have a yellow triangle with an exclamation point? Often motherboard drivers for the intel chipset/amd chipset can create cascading errors to ethernet, video, etc...

Nope, no yellow triangles with exclamation points.
