Help with internet connection

Okay, I feel stupid asking this, but does the rj45 port on my pc's I/O connect to the telephone line to get internet?

It connects to another RJ45 port. Most modern motherboards have a 1 gb connection through the RJ45 port. To connect to a dial up service you need to connect your RJ45 to a V.90 modem (56K) or a DSL modem. To connect to a cable service you will need a cable modem. Either way, I reccommend putting a switch between your modem and your computer.
