I installed Skyrim yesterday with 3 mods on my brand new desktop computer. It has an i7 core processor with an GeForce GTX 650 Ti graphics card. Is it the game itself that keeps crashing or is my computer not being able to keep up. It's already crashed about 4 times in the past hour and getting pretty annoying.

Your computer definitely has the horse power to keep up with Skyrim, depending on those mods.
Try disabling the mods, which can be a source of instability.
Also, are you using an overclock which hasn't been heavily stressed to insure instability?
Have you made sure to download the latest drivers for your GPU?
