Hi all,
I had Win XP sp2 and I recently installed a Win XP sp3 but before installing the new XP I was getting option to chkdsk but every time i skipped it and did not perform any disk check on my old XP(e.i sp2) but when I installed new XP sp 3 to my surprise I was still getting an option to chkdsk during start up,and when I carried out this chkdsk it showed an error "setupact.log cross linked..." and PC hanged...

1)now how should I get rid of this chkdsk which appears at every startup ? is there any file which I could edit manually to disable chkdsk ?

2)and why am I getting this msg even though I have formated the old XP and installed the new one ?

please help.
thanks

You haven't got a fresh and clean installation of XP - something must be left over form the old one. You can kill the Checkdisk loop but it might stop by itself if you let it run the check just once.

Click from Start to run and into the Open box, type regedit and press Enter. From the File menu, cchoose Export then note the name and locaiton of the file you're creating - it is a Registry backup and you might need it if anything goes wrong.

Next, navigate to the this key;

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL then click on Session Manager and find the sub-key BootExecute:REG_MULTI_SZ: and make sure the setting says autocheck autochk *

If it doesn't say that or it doesn't exist, create a key of that name and give it that value.

Leave the Registry from the File>Exit menu and restart the computer. If Chekdisk appears, let it run then restart again and it should have stopped.

thanks for reply,
I have already done all that mentioned by you,but its of no use the message for disk clean keeps appearing all the time.

You can kill the Checkdisk loop but it might stop by itself if you let it run the check just once.
just to clarify I would like to repeat myself "when I carried out this chkdsk it showed an error "setupact.log cross linked... and then pc hangs "

Was this done with the /f (fix errors) flag on? If not, try using the /f option. It may not work either, but it's worth a shot.

You are not supposed to skip the chkdsk, just let it run It won't appear again until an error in your fie system occurs.

If you keep skipping the chkdsk test, eventually your PC will no longer boot up to desktop.

Edit - THe setupact.log refers to the setup of the Account, you 've somehow managed to bypass the Account setup procedure during install which begs me to ask if you actually did do a clean install or just used this hard drive from a different Pc.
