Will Windows 7 Ultimate work on my pc with Pentium D 2.8 Ghz 1 gb Ram and intel 865 graphics (128 mb)

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

You would be able to install and run it. But do not expect the best performance.

Yes, but it won't run well. I would recommend a minimum of 2 GB of RAM and 4 GB if possible. You probably won't be able to run Windows Aero Glass either (the pretty GUI Interface). Honestly though, with hardware that old I'd stick with Windows XP if possible. It uses a lot less resources compared to Vista/7/8.

Another thought since I assume you're not gaming on this computer. If you're just trying to get away from the older Windows XP you should consider Linux. Unbuntu or Mint are two good examples. They require far less resources then Windows Vista/7/8 to do similar things.

I wouldn't invest anymore money in that computer. Even with an SSD you're running a pretty old motherboard, CPU, and meager amount of RAM. I'd save the money towards a new build when you can. For $500, possibly less, you could build a much better computer.
