Building a new PC. Have a 15.5'' LCD res-1366x768. I want to build a rig to max out major titles like current AC3, BF3, Crysis 3 and the next GTA at the resolution. I have two rigs to choose from:

RIG 1:

H77 motherboard
i5 3570
AMD 7850
650W PSU
Coolermaster 311
2xG.Skill Ripjawsx 4gb 1600

Rig 2:

All the same execpt
i7 3770
AMD 7970

My queries are:

1. Which one to choose to max games in the given resolution?

2. I am a bit confused about building my rig or waiting a year as with the APU's going better with DDR4 advent, and the all new GDDR6, and all the better next gens my PC will be totally outdated in a year or two???

If any other info req plz ask...

The 7850 should run every game at ultra on that low of a resolution. (Crysis 3 might be a struggle but hey it still looks fantastic on high.) I have a 7850 and a game well @ 1080p.

While the new apu's will be stronger I still see it better to go discreet for a gaming build for now.

Why would you want to game at that resolution on such a small screen. You can get a brand new 20+ inch 1080P monitor for under $100. An i7 and a 7970 would absolutely be overkill for such a monitor.

You seem to be willing to drop quite a chunk of $$ on a new PC, why not upgrade the monitor to match?

GDDR6 is still far of and DDR4 is also not as recent as you may think.

Besides, it will be some time before there APUs that can game successfully.

An HD7970 will server you well. Don't bother upgrading to an I7. It won't help you in games.

If those are your only options go with option 1 if you plan to stay at that resolution for the long term (but why would you?). If you plan to get a modern monitor (1080p or higher) then go option 2 for the longest lifespan.

As stated above, the best compromise would be a 3570/7970 and a better monitor.

Thanks for the advice but neither my parents nor am I willing to fund for a new monitor as it is relatively new i.e barely 4 months, as compared to my current Intel g630 and 6770 PC.

So is it the RIG1 is shall stick to with my monitor possibly bottleneck my PC or any other simillarly better combination???

And should I wait for the Streamroller???

I think at your resolution, even a 7850 is overkill. My brother can max out PlanetSide 2 on a 7750 and a G860. Your resolution is barely half the pixels of 1080p. Even with an overclocked 7850/7870 you can max out 99% of games at 1080p, so like a 7770 should be plenty

I'd get a 1080p Monitor, then start thinking about the kinda rigs you're linking.

Just get an Xbox 360

Come on we all wanted to say it.

Not to pester, but can I ask why you recently bought a low resolution monitor when you already had a GPU that could drive 1080p at middling settings with a plan to make a massive jump in GPU power four months down the road (or did the opportunity for a new build just pop up)?

Do you have a timeframe in mind on replacing the monitor? I'd use that to help decide. If the plan is "not for a long time" then I'd get the cheaper system knowing that I'd get a new system with a new monitor whenever that finally happens. It's just wasted horsepower in the meantime.

I do not hold any fancy for high resolution gaming, all I want is the best quality so I went for the 720p one. Anyway, that doesn't make any difference. But with the intel G630, HD 6770 and RAM 2gb it doesn't max out games like AC2(~30-35fps with all max) and GTA4(irritating stutters even on med-high). And the monitor isn't going anywhere till it stops working.

So there's no plan of changing it until it works properly. And as I have no problem gaming at this resolution, I planned to change the components to max out all possible games which is obviously not possible with my current specs.

The plans to upgrade system are long term, a few years or so which is why I am quite much concerned about next gen technologies. Although to a degree I understand that it won't be able to max out every game after 2-3years with any specification I currently choose. So I choose the i7 and 7970 system which is to my knowledge an excellent single GPU system. And as I am no master in hardware, I have the similar confusion if the above specs would be an overkill and waste of money, which led me to choose the relatively cheaper i5 and 7850 system.

You have all the details, it would be very thankful of you if you can suggest me any configuration even out of the two above that can prolong the maxing out at the resolution for a few years within a reasonable budget.

And that's exactly Why @ first I recommended OP the HD7870 or gtx 660 even at 720p
So his card will bring him few years of Joy.

But if I have to than I will go for RIG 1

H77 motherboard
i5 3570
AMD 7850 <-------------------should have been a 7870/660
650W PSU
Coolermaster 311
2xG.Skill Ripjawsx 4gb 1600

Well thanks, I'll be going with the i5 and the 7870.
